Case Study: Care UK Competency Validation to Support Organisational Change

Issues:

Care UK had recently experienced a lot of organizational change and there was a need to ensure the right behaviours were embedded into the organization.  Care UK approached Mendas to facilitate an independent validation of their group competency framework. Mendas worked closely with HR and the senior stakeholders of Care UK to explore whether the new competency framework was indicative of successful management in one of its divisions.

Our Approach:

Mendas used a rigorous and evidence-based approach to validate the competencies, which involved desk research on the current competency framework and assessment materials, and two types of interviewing techniques (Critical Incident Technique and Repertory Grid) to elicit a rich form of data from two levels of management on what effective behaviour looked like.

Outcome:

Our analysis identified the key behaviours required at this level of management and areas where the current competency framework needed to be modified. This offered an accurate assessment of the role, helping to support the business to effectively select, develop and train individuals within this role.  We also provided further recommendations to the business based on our research that were outside the context of validating the competencies, offering both short and long term benefits to the business around engagement and networking across all divisions.

This piece of work has been a success, gaining buy in from the directors.  Following on from this piece of work the other business divisions recognized the benefit of validating the competency framework within their area.  Mendas shared the methodology with Care UK group to ensure the framework is relevant for all areas in the organization, ultimately benefiting Care UK as a whole.
