When Assessing becomes Assisting... the Difference between Assessment Centres and Development Centres

Here at Mendas we get asked often, "What is the difference between assessment centres (ACs) and development centres (DCs)?" and whether people would worry less if an event was called DC rather than AC.

The methodology used is the same for both ACs and DCs because an appraisal is made about how "competent" individuals are. Sometimes the exercises used are also the same, such as ability tests, interviews, role plays, or group exercises. However, there are distinct differences in the aim of the events which is why they need to be treated very differently. We believe that for the event to be successful, you need to be clear about the purpose of the centre. Click here to read some thoughts about the key differences when running ACs and DCs.

Surviving the economic downturn - managers tell us their priorities!

The last six months is testament to the fact that our economic landscape is changing at a rate of knots. What implications does this have for talent management? What do organisations think is important in seeing them though the current downturn, enabling them to emerge stronger and fitter at the other end?

Read the results of the research we have carried out with managers

by Dr Simon Draycott and Justin Spray

The last few months...

...have been really exciting at Mendas. The work we carried out in partnership with the FSA on their graduate recruitment programme was yet again published in one of the main HR magazines. If you haven't read about this case study yet, grab the January issue of the HR Director to see what they wrote about it.

Dr Simon Draycott has been very busy recently going from appearing on Al Jazeera TV news to being quoted on the Executary magazine discussing stress at work and the impact of the recession on employees. At the same time, Justin's views on employee performance have been published on PersonnelZone.

But they haven't been the only busy people. Over the last 5 weeks, this is what we delivered for one of our clients:

  • run 93 days of events,
  • up to 8 events a day across 7 different locations spread from London to Glasgow,
  • to assess 660 candidates

And this was only one of 15 different projects we have been running at the same time. If you would like to know more about these projects, please check out some of our most recent case studies.
