These are the topics that caught our attention this quarter...

Graduates vs. the Career Crunch

First came the credit crunch, then the career crunch. Numbers of graduates are continuing to grow but the graduate job market is shrinking as firms struggle with keeping their balance sheets tidy.

So, how exactly has the graduate job market changed in the past few months, and what measures can graduates take in the current economic climate to ensure that they don’t find themselves on the wrong career path or queuing at the job centre?

Engaging employees

Given the current climate organisations may be tempted to put the issue of employee engagement on the back burner as budgetary matters take centre stage. But as people are clearly the key to lead businesses through the downturn and out the other side, investment in employees now will result in a stronger and more capable workforce better equipped to withstand the pressures of the recession.

Here at Mendas we get asked how organisations should go about approaching employee engagement. Read some thoughts on engagement from one of our Senior Psychologists, Marielke Pritchard.

MP expense claims – the unanswered question

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last few months, it would have proved next to impossible to escape the media’s providing us with the minutiae of MP expense claims. Not surprisingly, the facts have been met with a sense of outrage from the public who put these people into office. One question receiving less attention is ‘Why’?

Read Dr Simon Draycott’s answer to just this question.

Mendas in the Press

Check out Mendas Media Centre for all articles featuring Mendas in the press here.

Whilst Simon Draycott, Mendas Director, was busy giving advice to people affected by redundancy in an interview with the Financial Times, Mendas Director, Justin Spray, was being interviewed by The Guardian on the work pressures on the sandwich generation.

Are you concerned about the motivation of applicants to your roles?

Last month Justin presented at the Association of Graduate Recruiters Masterclass in Graduate recruitment. Discussions during the session made it clear how concerned recruiters are about the motivation of graduates applying for the jobs.

In response to this, we are going to investigate the issue of motivation and would like to set up a Focus Group. Whether you recruit graduates or for other roles, if you are interested or if you know anyone that would like to take part, please let us know by emailing emily.bennett@mendas.com. If you take part, we will share with you the results of the research as soon as ready.

Competition

As many of you said, “meaningful consultation” is “A discussion about the proposed redundancy covering the business rationale”.

This quarter competition question is:

Which type of motivation comes from the pleasure one gets from the task itself, from the sense of satisfaction in completing a task or even working on a task?

a. extrinsic motivation

b. intrinsic motivation

c. eccentric motivation
